NEW DELHI: The government on Monday said the country's IT sector is not fearing any job losses due to the global economic slowdown.

In a written reply to a query in Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Shakeel Ahmad said Indian IT companies did not fear job cuts due to global slowdown.

Quoting data provided by IT industry body NASSCOM, he said it is estimated that in 2007-08 the industry would add 3,75,000 professionals to its workforce.

He said as per the NASSCOM data the total revenue of the IT industry in 2007-08 is expected to reach $52 billion.

To another query, he said the total employment in the Indian IT-BOP sector is estimated to reach a total of 2.5 to 2.7 million by 2009-10.

The Minister in response to another question said the government has noticed very low penetration of personal computer in the rural ares due to the cost of the PC, access charge, non-availability of suitable content in the local language and others.

Government is in the process of establishment of 1,00,000 broadband Internet-enabled kiosks of Common Service Centres in rural areas of the country.

Besides, the government is facilitating the industry to make available computers at affordable prices in the country, he added.
